Elvis and The Civil War

Ok,here it is,the promised Elvis and the Civil War post.I thought it would be cool to do some research and see what I could find about Elvis and his civil war heritage.I found some pretty interesting things.
The most interesting of these findings is that Elvis is related to Confederate Gen. John Bell Hood. His grandmother Minnie Mae Presley was Hood's cousin, her maiden name is Hood.John Bell Hood fought and was wounded at Gettysburg. It seems that Elvis's relatives were very busy at Gettysburg.Darlin Presley of the 26th North Carolina took part in the famous "Picketts Charge" on the last day of the battle of Gettysburg. He was captured and sent to Point Lookout prison camp in Maryland where he later died.Another relative Horton Presley also fought at Gettysburg as a member of the 55th North Carolina.
Now to the big question, for which side would Elvis have fought if he were alive during the Civil war?Of course we can only speculate because Elvis never publicly addressed the question. He was a very proud southerner and is held in high esteem in the south,he was born in Tupelo,Ms and spent the rest of his days in Tenn.At the same time Elvis was a very proud American,he served 2 years in the Army turning down oppurtunities to serve in special services. He wanted to serve his country like any other soldier with no special treatment. He was discharged in 1960 honorably with the rank of Seargant. There really is no way to guess where his loyalty would have fallen if he had been around in those days and I don't want to try and speculate on the issue.Who knows the split between love of country and love of the south may have made him not fight for either side. One of his most famous concert songs was "The American Trilogy" which starts with Dixie and ends with "The Battle hymm of the Republic" paying tribute to both the South and The U.S. and I think that sums it up,thank God he did'nt have to choose,he was a proud Southern American and made his country proud on all 4 corners of the earth.(Pictures-Gen.
