Feb,28,1970-Elvis is once again doing 2 more shows at the Houston Astrodome.This evenings show packs a crowd of 43,614,setting a new record for indoor rodeo performances in any arena.(above-a fan shot from afternoon show)
Feb,27,1970-Elvis is in Houston ,Tx for his first appearance at the Houston Astrodome.He holds a noon press conference talking about his musical roots,the current music scene and how those Sun records sounded "Funny" to him.He does his first show at 2pm,making a dramatic entrance circling the arena in a jeep.He is discouraged during and after the first show because of the poor acoustics and what he considered to be an indifferent response from a less than capacity crowd.But then his spirits are lifted at the evening show by the tremendous response from a crowd of 36,299(10,000 more than the previous record)and his performance is called "Masterful" by Robert Hilburn of the Los Angeles Times.Below is the complete press conference plus some fan shot footage of the show!!
FEB,26,1962-Elvis reports to Paramount Pictures to begin work on his new picture "Girls! Girls! Girls!Producer Hal Wallis is fueled by the success of the movie "Blue Hawaii" and is determined to promote Elvis the entertainer over Elvis the rebel actor.He wants to showcase him in fun,wholesome family films for all ages.With that in mind Norman Taurog,director of "Blue Hawaii" is once again the man in charge. Soundtrack recordings begin at 11 am and run til after midnight,one Elvis classic does come out of this Film,writer Otis Blackwell's "Return to Sender",not written for the film,gets onto the soundtrack and is a hit for Elvis.It peaks at # 2 in the U.S and hits # 1 in the U.K.(Check out "Return to Sender" from "Girls! FEB,25,1956- Today Elvis scores his very first # 1 hit....no it is not "Heartbreak Hotel"...it is "I forgot to Remember to Forget" Elvis' last Sun records single,which hit the top spot after 24 weeks of climbing the country and western charts.Take a listen to this Sun classic below!!
FEB,24,1965- A soundtrack session for Elvis' new MGM film "Harum Scarum" is set up at the last minute in Nashville.Because of the hurried fashion in which it is set up,Elvis' regular session players are unable to be there.This is Elvis' first time in a studio in eight months and the musicians and technicians note his distraction and disaffection with the soundtrack material.He ends the session at 3:30 am after doing 38 miserable takes of "Shake that Tambourine"(watch video of "Shake that Tambourine" from Harum Scarum Below)
FEB,23,1956- Exhausted by the constant touring schedule and his own energetic performances,Elvis collapses in the parking lot after the first show of a 2 night engagement in Jacksonville,Fl.He is taken to the hospital where the doctor tells him to "slow down". Feb,23,1970- Elvis finishes his Feb-1970 Las Vegas engagement with a midnight show that runs til 3 am,giving what many will say is one of his finest performances.He introduces Col.Parker to the audience in this show saying"He is not only my manager but I Love him very much"(picture at top-Elvis on stage in 1956)
FEB,22,1969- One of Elvis's most historic recording sessions comes to an end.For the last 2 months Elvis has been recording at American Sound Studios in Memphis.These sessions have produced classics such as "Suspicious Minds", "In The Ghetto", Kentucky Rain", "Don't Cry Daddy" and others.Some say that these sessions are Elvis at his artistic best.On this day ,Elvis finishes these sessions recording a Gospel number called "Who Am I". I am first and foremost an Elvis fan,have been since age of 5.Other than the king,I volunteer my time at Antietam national battlefield in Sharpsburg,Md.I am also a civil war buff and have a great desire to preserve our nations battlefields.But most of my time outside of work is spent working on my tribute show.
